If you like to bake with coffee, homemade coffee essence is essential! Coffee essence is a wonderful flavoring tool for cakes and icings… and it is easy to make! All you need is:
- 1 cup of strong bitter coffee brewed at triple strength. I recommend using:
- Italian Roast: great all around coffee
- Sumatra Mandheling: wonderful if you tend to make spicier desserts
- Organic Peru Dark: perfect for sweet chocolate and vanilla toned desserts
- 3/4 cup of sugar
1) Over medium heat, whisk sugar into coffee until fully dissolved.
2) Bring mixture to a slow boil and let boil for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens and reduces in size, about 7 minutes.

3) Remove the mixture from the heat and allow to cool… and that is it! Enjoy!
