The queen’s coffee lemonade

The Arnold Palmer (half iced tea – half lemonade) is a much-treasured summertime drink. Not as well known, but equally delicious — the coffee lemonade. Lemon in my coffee, you may ask? The answer is yes! Lemon adds some natural sweetness and brightness to your cup while lessening any bitterness. Additionally, studies show many health benefits associated with adding lemon to your morning routine. Lemon, a natural detoxifier, can help with digestion, help to remove bloat, and work as a fat burning supplement. What follows is a take on the classic Portuguese Mazagran — a great way to introduce lemon into your coffee.

*Lemonade

Add the juice of 4 freshly squeezed lemons to 4 cups water and 1 cup simple syrup**. Combine into a pitcher and stir until dissolved. The 1 cup of simple syrup is a recommendation, you should adjust this based on your desired level of sweetness.

**Simple syrup

Mix 1 cup of water, and 1 cup of sugar in a small saucepan. Heat over a medium flame until the mixture is dissolved. Remove from heat. If you like, infuse this mixture with 1 tablespoon of your favorite flavor (you can use any flavor you like, rosemary, lemon, lime, lavender, or rose, for example). If infusing, let the mixture steep for approximately twenty minutes, then strain and refrigerate in an airtight container for later use.
