Three summer worthy, fruity, chilled macchiato style drinks

Ah, summertime! The smell of the flowers, that warm summer breeze! There is nothing better than a chilled fruity drink to cool you off when the weather begins to heat up your skin! Here are 3 easy to prepare, summer-worthy coffee drinks for your enjoyment.

Ingredients for one drink

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 ounces espresso
  • 2 teaspoons fruity syrup — follow the instructions below to make your own or use your favorite store bought syrup
  • Ice
  • Extra fruity syrup, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, whipped cream, or any other topping you desire!

Instructions

To ice or not to ice.

Typically a chilled macchiato is constructed by filling your glass approximately 2/3 with ice, and then adding two teaspoons of syrup followed by milk and then 2 ounces of espresso. You can top your drink with extra sweetener (chocolate, caramel sauce, whipped cream, more syrup, or a combination of the former). The drink can be enjoyed layered, as the coffee will settle atop the milk, or blended. Below are two iced macchiato recipes and one made with chilled and frothed milk sans ice.

Pro tips: If you do not have access to espresso, you can use strongly brewed regular coffee. Just use 4 ounces of coffee and reduce the milk amount accordingly. To further enhance the flavor of your drink use a flavored coffee!

Chilled blueberry macchiato

1.) Add two teaspoon of homemade blueberry simple syrup (recipe below) to a glass.

2.) Add 4 ounces of very cold milk onto the syrup and mix.

3.) Froth 4 ounces of milk and scoop the foam on top of the blueberry milk.

4.) Pour 2 ounces espresso into the glass.

5.) Top that mixture with whipped cream, some crushed blueberries and drizzle blueberry syrup over the top.

Iced chocolate covered strawberry macchiato

1.) Fill your glass 2/3 with ice.

2.) Pour 2 teaspoons of strawberry syrup into your glass of ice.

3.) Add 1 cup milk into the glass

4.) Add 2 ounces of espresso.

5.) Drizzle chocolate sauce and additional strawberry syrup on top.

Iced salted banana caramel chocolate macchiatto

1.) Fill a glass 2/3 with ice.

2.) Add 2 teaspoons of banana syrup.

3.) Fill the glass with milk.

4.) Pour 2 ounces of espresso into the glass.

5.) Top with caramel sauce, and or chocolate sauce, and sprinkle a bit of salt over the top.

Simple syrups used in these recipes

In a small saucepan combine 1/2 cup each, water, and sugar. Cook on medium heat stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved. The solution should appear clear, not “foggy”. Chop 1/2 cup fruit into small pieces. Mix your fruit into the water mixture and bring the contents to a boil. Allow it to come to a low boil, and then reduce the heat to low, and simmer until the sauce thickens (an additional 10-15 minutes). Stir constantly as you may need to adjust the time depending on the desired thickness of your syrup. Allow it to cool. Strain the syrup into an air-tight container and refrigerate for later use.

Pro Tip: If you want a sweeter syrup, increase the amount of sugar. For a thinner syrup increase the amount of water. If you want a thicker syrup add a pinch of cornstarch!
